GRA activates emergency measures to protect businesses amid severe flooding in Accra
Accra, Ghana — As torrential rains continue to paralyze Ghana’s capital, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has activated emergency measures to support business continuity and protect livelihoods amid worsening flood conditions.
In a press release issued on June 29, 2026, the GRA acknowledged the severe operational strain inflicted by hostile weather conditions that have disrupted transport networks, delayed essential goods movement, and crippled day-to-day business operations across Accra and other affected regions.
The revenue authority emphasized that ongoing torrential rains are causing widespread disruption to transport networks, severely delaying the movement of essential goods, and placing intense pressure on enterprises striving to meet customer and regulatory obligations.
To counter this paralysis, the GRA has deployed aggressive measures across its operational network to maintain essential customs and domestic tax services. Teams at the country’s ports, border posts, and Taxpayer Service Centers (TSCs) have implemented contingency plans to keep legitimate trade flowing and minimize avoidable disruptions.
As part of its mitigation strategy, the GRA is strongly encouraging businesses to utilize its digital service platforms where feasible, recognizing that physical access to tax offices may be compromised during flooding events. The authority has also advised companies to factor significant transportation and supply chain delays into their operational planning.
Crucially, the GRA issued a clear directive prioritizing human welfare over commercial interests, stating unequivocally that “businesses are encouraged to place the safety of their employees first. No business activity is more important than protecting lives.”
While affirming its commitment to supporting Ghanaian enterprises through this challenging period, the GRA pledged to maintain service continuity while aggressively protecting the national revenue required for development initiatives. The authority concluded by urging the general public to strictly adhere to all safety and survival advisories issued by national emergency and weather services as the rains persist.
The GRA’s emergency response comes amid widespread flooding that has affected major commuter routes and residential areas including the N1 Highway, Apenkwa, Achimota, Kaneshie, Weija, Spintex, Darkuman Junction, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange — areas also highlighted in the New Patriotic Party’s criticism of governmental flood response efforts.
As floodwaters threaten both lives and livelihoods, the GRA’s focus on digital service adaptation and employee safety represents a pragmatic approach to maintaining essential government functions while recognizing the humanitarian imperative at the heart of the crisis.
For businesses navigating these challenging conditions, the authority’s message is clear: leverage available digital tools, plan for logistical disruptions, and above all, prioritize the safety and wellbeing of employees above all other considerations.
As Ghana grapples with increasingly frequent and severe weather events, the balance between maintaining essential revenue collection and protecting public safety will remain a critical test of institutional resilience and adaptive capacity.
