Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam Urges Pastors to Cultivate Positive Attitudes for Holistic Ministry Leadership

At the 3rd Apostolic Visitation of the Central Region Assemblies of God in Ghana, held in Assin Atonsu on June 21, 2026, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God in Ghana, delivered a powerful address urging pastors nationwide to cultivate positive attitudes as fundamental to effective and holistic ministry leadership. Speaking to a gathering of clergy and church leaders, Wengam identified grumbling, excessive anxiety, and cynicism as destructive behaviors that erode personal peace, damage credibility, and foster distrust within congregations—attitudes fundamentally incompatible with the faith‑based vocation of Christian ministers.

The solution, he emphasized, lies in disciplined spiritual practices. Wengam called on pastors to prioritize prolonged prayer, deep personal Bible study, and meditation as essential tools for maintaining a God‑centered mindset. These disciplines, he argued, not only counteract spiritual fatigue but also build the resilience necessary to navigate the complex pressures of modern ministry while remaining anchored in faith.

The visitation included a structured 3.5‑hour prayer session, meticulously divided into three segments: thanksgiving and repentance, rededication to ministry, and intercession. The intercession focused on pressing matters including the upcoming General Council meeting scheduled for August, the World Congress of Assemblies of God set for Accra in October 2024, and the personal and congregational needs of those present.

A significant portion of Wengam’s message centered on the sanctity of marriage within the pastoral vocation. He firmly reiterated the Assemblies of God’s doctrinal stance that does not condone divorce followed by remarriage, stressing that ministerial marriages must exemplify unity, love, and unwavering commitment. Such marriages, he noted, serve as a critical model for congregations and directly influence the spiritual and moral foundation of the church. This teaching was reinforced by Lady Mrs. Monica Wengam, National President of the Ministers’ Wives Association, who urged pastors’ spouses to embody Christlike humility, selfless service, and steadfast support in their sacred roles.

Acknowledging the unique challenges faced by ministers serving in rural and under‑resourced communities, Wengam highlighted concrete initiatives undertaken by the Assemblies of God to support vulnerable servants of God. The church has provided clothing and cash donations to pastors’ widows, recognizing their often precarious socioeconomic situations. Additionally, financial assistance and gifts have been extended to the wives of retired ministers and to retired pastors themselves. Wengam framed these gestures as strategic investments in the well‑being of God’s servants, ensuring that financial or emotional burdens do not hinder their ability to fulfill their divine calling.

The visitation concluded on a notable note with the presentation of the Royal Servant Leadership Award to Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam and Lady Monica Wengam in recognition of their visionary leadership, compassionate service, and unwavering dedication to the church and community. Regional Superintendent Anthony Efinu described the apostolic visitation as a transformative moment, signaling renewed potential for revival and numerical growth within the Assemblies of God in Ghana.

As the denomination prepares for both national gatherings, such as the General Council, and international events like the World Congress, Wengam’s message remains profoundly relevant. He reminded pastors that authentic, holistic ministry leadership originates from the leader’s inner posture—shaped by attitudes, disciplines, and relational integrity. By deliberately cultivating positivity through spiritual devotion, nurturing marriages that reflect Christ’s love, and actively supporting colleagues in need, pastors can deepen their own walk with God and, consequently, lead their congregations with greater effectiveness, compassion, and grace.
