Accra Institute of Technology Matriculates 586 Students, Urges 'Sovereign Learners' to Embrace AI Era

Technology

The Accra Institute of Technology has formally admitted 586 students for the 2025/2026 academic year, with its president calling on the new cohort to become “sovereign learners” capable of thriving in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and digital transformation.

The matriculation ceremony, held on Saturday, June 13, at the university’s Knowledge City Campus in Kokomlemle, Accra, brought together new students admitted across programmes in engineering, information technology, computer science, business administration, occupational health and safety management, project management, and doctoral studies.

A New Philosophy of Learning

AIT President Professor Clement K. Dzidonu framed the ceremony around a central theme: “Preparing the Sovereign Learner for a World of Opportunity, Possibility and Difference.” In his address, he argued that universities exist not merely to award degrees but to develop capable human beings who can think critically, solve problems creatively, adapt to changing circumstances, and contribute meaningfully to society.

“We are in the age of the sovereign learner,” Professor Dzidonu told the matriculants. He urged them to recognise opportunities, explore possibilities, and create meaningful differences in their lives and communities, while also attending lectures consistently, acting ethically, managing their time wisely, and committing themselves to lifelong learning.

The president’s message carried particular weight given the rapid pace of technological change reshaping industries worldwide. His call for students to embrace independent thinking, continuous learning, innovation, and responsible leadership reflected a broader conversation within African higher education about how universities must evolve to remain relevant.

A Track Record in Technology Education

AIT enters the new academic year with a strong reputation. The institution has won the “Best Technology University in Ghana” award at the Ghana Tertiary Awards for a fourth consecutive year and has also been recognised as the “Best in Technology-Focused University in Ghana” by Global Business Insight, a UK-based organisation.

The university is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and offers both campus-based and Open University programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Its academic partnerships include the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology for engineering, computer science, IT, and business administration programmes, as well as the Open University of Malaysia for master’s and doctoral studies.

Students Pledge Their Commitment

Representing the incoming class, Mr. Samuel Peace Kamara delivered the matriculants’ acceptance speech, expressing gratitude to the university’s leadership, faculty, and staff. He pledged that the cohort would uphold the institution’s values, study diligently, and become responsible professionals able to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.

The ceremony underscored AIT’s positioning as a key player in Ghana’s technology education landscape, a role that becomes increasingly important as the country seeks to build a workforce equipped for the digital economy. The emphasis on AI-readiness and sovereign learning signals the direction in which the institution intends to steer its curriculum and pedagogy in the years ahead.
