The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested two men suspected of armed robbery and recovered a stolen motorbike following what authorities described as a swift intelligence-led operation in the Sissala East District.
The suspects, identified as 20-year-old Seidu Muizu and 22-year-old Salifu Mutada, were apprehended in connection with a robbery that took place on May 30 along the Tumu-Kowie road. According to a police statement issued on June 1, the pair allegedly held up three people at gunpoint and fled with an unregistered Apsonic motorbike.
Acting on intelligence gathered in the immediate aftermath of the attack, officers moved quickly to track down the suspects. The operation yielded not only the stolen Apsonic motorbike but also a second unregistered vehicle — a Loujia model — which investigators believe was used to carry out the robbery. Both motorbikes have been impounded as evidence.
The arrest has opened a wider investigation. Police say information gathered so far suggests the two suspects may be connected to a series of robbery attacks that have terrorised residents in Tumu and surrounding communities in recent weeks. Investigators are now expanding their enquiries to determine whether Muizu and Mutada were involved in other reported criminal activities across the district.
The case highlights the persistent security challenges facing communities in Ghana’s Upper West Region, where residents have long grappled with incidents of highway robbery and petty crime. The region’s vast, sparsely populated terrain and limited policing resources have historically made it difficult for law enforcement to respond rapidly to criminal activity.
Similar concerns about security vulnerabilities in Ghana’s border and rural communities have been raised elsewhere. A recent report on conditions at Elubo, a major border town in the Western Region, documented how the absence of basic infrastructure — including street lighting — has created persistent security risks that the state has allowed to fester.
The Upper West Regional Police Command commended members of the public for their cooperation in the operation, underscoring the critical role that community intelligence plays in combating crime in areas where formal policing capacity remains stretched thin.
Authorities have urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to law enforcement agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains essential to maintaining peace and security across the region. The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations.
Efforts are also underway to recover the firearm allegedly used during the robbery, police said.
