Myres Odonkor Junior Claims GH₢100K as 1v1 Africa Brings Football Fever to Accra

A new kind of football spectacle arrived in Accra on Sunday, and Myres Manuel Odonkor Junior was its first champion. The young Ghanaian was crowned winner of the Accra edition of the 1v1 Africa Football Challenge at the AIS Astro Turf in East Legon, walking away with a cool GH₢100,000 prize after a day of electrifying one-on-one duels.

The format is simple but compelling: two players, one ball, one turf — and the best individual talent wins. From early morning, fans packed the perimeter of the Astro Turf, drawn by the promise of seeing raw skill tested in its purest form. There are no teammates to pass to, no tactical systems to hide behind. Just footwork, composure and nerve.

Odonkor Junior delivered all three in abundance. He progressed through the rounds with a string of commanding performances, each victory more emphatic than the last, before sealing the title in the final to claim the biggest prize of the tournament.

Opoku Elvis took second place and GH₢50,000, while Chris Mensah rounded out the podium in third with GH₢25,000. The Best Goalkeeper award went to Senyo Martin, whose reflexes between the sticks earned him GH₢30,000. In total, more than GH₢400,000 was distributed across the competition — a significant investment in grassroots talent.

The event was hosted by Nigerian music star and entrepreneur Mr Eazi, whose involvement lends the platform both cultural cachet and continental reach. Supported by Mobike, the Accra edition blended football, entertainment and community into a single, buzzing spectacle.

One of the loudest cheers of the day came when popular Ghanaian actor Sulley Sadik stepped onto the turf for a special one-on-one face-off with Mr Eazi — a light-hearted but fiercely competitive cameo that became one of the event’s standout moments.

The Accra edition follows the competition’s successful debut in Lagos, Nigeria, where 1v1 Africa generated significant buzz for its innovative format. Sunday’s strong turnout in East Legon suggests the concept has legs well beyond Nigeria, and organisers have confirmed plans to expand into more cities across the continent.

The initiative arrives at a time when Ghana football is enjoying renewed corporate investment. betPawa, UMB and TECNO recently signed sponsorship and partnership deals with the Ghana Football Association worth millions of cedis, signalling growing confidence in the sport’s commercial potential at both the elite and grassroots levels.

“Ghana showed up today. The level of talent we saw on this pitch was incredible,” Mr Eazi said after the final. “What makes 1v1 Africa special is that it gives players a platform to express themselves and be seen. After Lagos, it feels great to be here in Accra, and this is only the beginning.”

For the players, the appeal is clear: a stage where individual brilliance is celebrated and rewarded. For fans, it offers something different — every duel carries the intensity of a final, and the intimate setting puts spectators closer to the action than any stadium can.

With successful editions now completed in both Lagos and Accra, 1v1 Africa is fast establishing itself as one of the continent’s most exciting grassroots football platforms. In a sport increasingly dominated by corporate structures and billion-dollar broadcast deals, there is something refreshing about a format that strips football back to its most essential contest: one player against another.
