Stella Seal Says Her Songs Are Used Without Permission

Gospel veteran Stella Aba Seal warns that young Ghanaian musicians are using her songs without permission, calling the trend a sign of disrespect for trailblazers.

Speaking on Onua Showtime, Seal described the practice as painful and discouraging, adding that many artists “record first and only inform the owners when they are set to release.”

“They don’t ask for permission before using my songs,” she said, emphasizing that the lack of respect extends beyond music to acting and boxing, where pioneers are often overlooked.

Seal argued that honouring trailblazers is not deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture, contrasting it with sports personalities who regularly receive public recognition for community projects.

“In Ghana, honouring is not part of our culture. We don’t respect trailblazers and pathfinders. It happens rarely, unlike in sports where international footballers have built houses for communities and offered support,” she stated.

She noted that when veterans raise concerns, they are sometimes labelled as attention‑seekers. “When you try to correct them … they say you just want to trend, even when you are old enough to give birth to them,” Seal added.

Drawing a comparison with Nigeria, Seal praised the consistent respect shown by Nigerian creatives. “In Nigeria, young actors and musicians visit legends with gifts and receive blessings. In Ghana, it’s only Nana Ama McBrown that I have seen replicating that,” she explained.

Seal also warned that universal laws govern actions. “There are spiritual, physical and universal laws, and they work. If I don’t say anything, the laws in the air will deal with you,” she cautioned, citing the principle of sowing and reaping.

“What you sow is what you will reap. Karmic laws work. It doesn’t matter how much you pray or speak in tongues, karma will catch up with you,” she said, urging younger artists to act responsibly.

She concluded by calling on the younger generation to be mindful, reminding them that “as humans, we must do good.”
