Ghana Safer and Freer for Journalists After Elections

Politics

Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, says Ghana enjoys a more stable political climate and expanded media freedom a year after the 7th December 2024 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show, Gbande explained that the current administration has fostered a “stabilised society of unism,” reducing the perception that a handful of families dominate national affairs – a narrative that surged during the 2024 campaign.

He highlighted the improvement in free expression, noting that journalists are no longer “crying because they are being cajoled to tow the government agenda.” Gbande pointed to outspoken critic Aburunya, who continues to speak freely despite prior arrests.

Gbande also said the government now shows stronger fiscal discipline and greater urgency in delivering projects. He cited a petition from chiefs in Berekuso about an abandoned road, describing the response as a “level of urgency that ministers under President Mahama attached to national duty.”

According to Gbande, after the chiefs presented the petition, the Roads Ministry visited Berekuso the very next day to meet them, a contrast to the alleged neglect under former President Akufo‑Addo, when the same road project was awarded then abandoned in a key NPP enclave.

He concluded by thanking “the people who stood up to speak out against the ills so that we can save this country,” and saluted their courage.
