Bar shooting in South Africa kills 11, child among victims

Africa

At least eleven people, among them a three‑year‑old boy, were killed Saturday after gunfire erupted at an illegal shebeen in Pretoria’s Saulsville township, South African police said.

The incident also left fourteen others wounded, according to a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Police have not confirmed whether the shooting took place inside or outside the makeshift bar.

SAPS said three of the dead were minors – a three‑year‑old boy, a twelve‑year‑old boy and a sixteen‑year‑old girl. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims,” a police spokesperson stated, adding that a manhunt is underway for three unidentified suspects.

Pretoria police have launched a manhunt for the three suspects, though names have not been disclosed. Officers are urging anyone with information to contact the nearest police station.

The tragedy underscores South Africa’s grim homicide statistics; the country records roughly sixty murders daily, one of the highest rates worldwide.

Ghanaian travellers in South Africa are being advised to exercise heightened caution, especially in townships known for illegal shebeens. The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has urged its citizens to avoid such venues and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.

The incident adds pressure on South African officials to tackle illegal shebeens, which are often linked to gang activity and illicit liquor trade. Human‑rights groups have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement and community outreach to curb the violence.

As the manhunt continues, families mourn the loss of their loved ones while communities hope for swift justice. Updates will be provided as more information emerges.
