A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged a concerted effort to undermine the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). Senyo Amekplenu claims recent criticisms leveled against the OSP by the Majority Leader in Parliament are not isolated incidents, but part of a deliberate scheme.
Speaking on the AM show on Friday, Amekplenu argued that powerful elements are attempting to “cripple the one watchdog they can’t control.” He suggested this points to a calculated attempt to erode the independence and authority of the OSP.
“The Majority Leader’s attacks on the OSP aren’t accidental — they’re a coordinated attempt to cripple the one watchdog they can’t control,” Amekplenu stated.
The claims come as a Private Members’ Bill seeking to abolish the OSP is currently before Parliament. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (Repeal) Bill, 2025, was laid by MPs Mahama Ayariga and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.
The bill proposes repealing the OSP Act, 2017 (Act 959), and reverting prosecutorial authority for corruption cases back to the Attorney-General’s office.
Parliamentary debate on the bill has grown heated in recent weeks. Supporters of the repeal argue the OSP has not justified its considerable budgetary allocations since its inception and has failed to demonstrably reduce corruption.
However, other voices maintain that the OSP’s continued existence is crucial for ensuring impartial investigations, free from political interference.
Amekplenu firmly believes that even with its admitted limitations, the OSP is “the only institution positioned to independently tackle public corruption” and should be bolstered, not dismantled. He warned that any move to scrap the OSP would send a negative signal about Ghana’s commitment to fighting corruption.
“Regardless of challenges, we must strengthen the OSP, not destroy it. Abolishing it sends a terrible message to the international community and our citizens,” Amekplenu cautioned.
