A significant setback has hit the campaign of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, as his Jasikan Constituency Campaign Coordinator, Elizabeth Anim Kessewaah Adjornor, has defected to the camp of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The defection of Madam Adjornor, who previously served as the Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE) for the area, comes just weeks before the NPP’s crucial primaries.
In a press statement released today, Madam Adjornor explained that her decision followed “deep personal reflection and sincere consultation.” She expressed her firm belief that Dr. Bawumia possesses “the vision, discipline, and forward-looking leadership that Ghana needs at this critical stage of our democratic journey.”
“My heart continues to yearn for the political home where I once belonged,” she stated, emphasizing her long-standing relationship with the former Vice President. “I am convinced, beyond doubt, that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents the vision, discipline, and forward-looking leadership that Ghana needs at this critical stage of our democratic journey.”
Acknowledging her earlier support for Dr. Acheampong, Madam Adjornor apologized to Dr. Bawumia for any unintended consequences her previous stance may have caused. She admitted that her initial endorsement of Bryan Acheampong might have led some of her supporters to follow suit.
“I also wish to use this opportunity to render an unreserved apology to His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Although I never issued any unpalatable or derogatory statement against him, I acknowledge that my public support for Bryan Acheampong may have inadvertently drawn a considerable number of people away from the DMB camp,” she explained.
“This was never my intention, and I regret any inconvenience or misunderstanding my actions may have caused. Accordingly, I humbly entreat all supporters, associates, and sympathizers who left the DMB camp on my account to return home, just as I have done. Our collective strength lies in unity, loyalty, and a shared belief in credible leadership.”
