NPP Disciplinary Committee Urges Calm Over Agyapong Referral, Emphasizes Party Unity

In a recent appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, John Darko, the Member of Parliament for Suame, called for calm within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the referral of former Assin Central MP and presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong to the party’s National Disciplinary Committee. Darko emphasized that the disciplinary process is a standard internal mechanism and should not be interpreted as an attempt to sideline or persecute Agyapong.

“The disciplinary committee doesn’t mean that he will be crucified. The party has structures. If you have any issue, you go through that particular channel,” Darko stated. He expressed confidence that the committee’s engagement with Agyapong could lead to a resolution that strengthens party unity, whether through exoneration or appropriate corrective action.

Darko urged the party leadership to approach the matter with caution and fairness, ensuring inclusivity. He warned against public attacks, particularly by younger activists, as the NPP seeks to rebuild after its electoral defeat. “We have one party to build and we have elections to win. As much as possible, we should be measured in the way we discuss issues concerning the party,” he added.

Drawing from his four-year collaboration with Agyapong, Darko affirmed the latter’s commitment to both the party and the nation. He appealed to the leadership to handle the matter in a way that does not create the impression of wishing anyone away, noting the party’s efforts to attract new members and convince supporters of other parties to join.

However, Darko disagreed with Agyapong’s assertions regarding the Agenda 111 hospital project, particularly the claim of little or no progress on the Afari Military Hospital. According to Darko, substantial work has been completed under the previous NPP administration: staff housing is about 77% complete, roads are around 80% complete, and landscaping is also about 77% complete.

He lamented that the Health Committee’s focus on the Afari Hospital project had become a source of division rather than an opportunity to highlight the party’s achievements in the health sector. “My worry is that the Health Committee had brought the issue of the Afari Hospital to the front burner for discussion, and it was an opportunity for the party to rally around an important issue. Instead, we are now focused on internal disagreements,” Darko said.

Despite the controversy, Darko expressed confidence in the disciplinary process and urged party members to allow the committee to complete its two-week investigation and submit its recommendations. He stressed that the NPP should focus on strengthening the party and winning future elections rather than creating unnecessary divisions.
