The Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi is overflowing with mourners as Ghana prepares to bid farewell to Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba (DL).
Crowds have been gathering at the stadium, traditionally a venue for sporting events, for hours ahead of the public viewing and funeral service. This demonstrates the immense cultural significance of the deceased musician.
JoyNews reporters on the ground observed a bustling atmosphere, with traders capitalizing on the occasion to sell Daddy Lumba-branded merchandise, including t-shirts and other memorabilia. Mourners were also seen discussing the recent legal battles surrounding the funeral arrangements, which were finally resolved on Friday evening (December 12) after a High Court gave the go-ahead for the service to proceed.
Daddy Lumba’s musical journey, spanning over three decades and producing more than 30 albums, has left an undeniable impact on the Ghanaian music scene. His songs have touched the hearts of generations.
Today’s service offers Ghanaians a platform to collectively honour the man behind timeless hits like ‘Sese Wo Suban’ and ‘Aben Wo Aha,’ tunes that have become integral to the nation’s cultural identity.
Following the public tributes and service, Daddy Lumba’s remains will be moved to a private location for interment, marking the end of an era. However, the outpouring of grief and celebration at the Baba Yara Stadium confirm that his musical legacy will endure for years to come.
