Mahama Slams Broken Health Equipment for Non-Communicable Diseases

President John Dramani Mahama has raised alarm bells over Ghana’s capacity to effectively tackle the increasing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), pointing to widespread breakdowns of vital equipment in major hospitals.

Addressing attendees at the WHX Leaders Africa event in Accra on December 9, 2025, the former President revealed that critical diagnostic tools at leading health facilities, particularly in Accra and Kumasi, are non-functional, hindering patient care.

“There is a major problem. There are no diagnostic equipment. MRIs have broken down, CT scans are broken down. There’s limited cancer treatment outside Accra and Kumasi, our two major cities. So it’s not just about the money for treatment – the equipment needed to diagnose and to treat is in very limited supply,” he stated.

While acknowledging the progress made by the private sector in expanding diagnostic and treatment options, President Mahama emphasized the urgent need for greater government intervention.

To address the shortfall, he announced that additional resources will be directed through the Mahama Cares policy, with plans to broaden the scope of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to include support for private hospitals.

President Mahama stressed that ensuring access to working diagnostic equipment is paramount to making substantial headway in reducing mortality rates from cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other NCDs affecting the Ghanaian population.
