Mahama Calls on Global Manufacturers to Invest in Ghana

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on international vaccine manufacturers to partner with Ghana to establish a Vaccine Manufacturing Hub. The initiative aims to significantly improve the country’s and the continent’s health security.

Mr. Mahama made the appeal while addressing pharmaceutical industry leaders at the WHX Leaders Conference. He emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed Africa’s vulnerability due to its heavy reliance on imported vaccines.

According to the former President, a local vaccine hub would not only boost Ghana’s production capacity but also strengthen the region’s ability to respond to future health crises. “We cannot continue to depend entirely on imports for vaccines that determine our survival. We are calling on manufacturers and investors to collaborate with government to make this hub a reality,” he stated.

He further highlighted Ghana’s existing pharmaceutical infrastructure and its strategic location in West Africa as key advantages in leading vaccine development and distribution across the continent.

Trade and Industry Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, revealed that her ministry is actively working with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat to facilitate seamless trade in pharmaceutical products once local vaccine production commences.

“We are working closely with the AfCFTA to create smooth access for our manufacturers across Africa. This is essential if we want to build strong, competitive industries,” she explained.

Peter Hall, President for the Middle East, India, Turkey and Africa at Informa Markets, also underscored the importance of platforms like the WHX Leaders Conference in fostering collaboration and driving innovation within the health and industrial sectors.

The WHX Leaders Conference convened policymakers, health experts, investors, and pharmaceutical companies to discuss advancements in health systems, industrial transformation, and Africa’s preparedness for future global challenges.
