Trade Minister Addresses Tomato Sector Challenges with Traders and Transporters

Government is seeking collaborative solutions to restore stability to the nation’s tomato value chain, following a meeting with key stakeholders on Wednesday, December 17.

Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, held discussions with the Federation of Tomato Growers Associations and the Ghana National Tomato Traders and Transporters Association at the Ministry’s conference room.

The meeting aimed to address longstanding challenges disrupting tomato distribution across the country, including pricing disputes, transportation difficulties, and significant post-harvest losses.

Madam Ofosu-Adjare reiterated the government’s commitment to working with all players in the sector to find sustainable solutions that safeguard livelihoods and promote fair trade.

“We need cooperation among producers, traders and transporters to really grow the tomato sector,” she stated, adding that better coordination would lessen the reliance on importing tomatoes from neighbouring countries.

Representatives from both associations expressed their appreciation for the engagement and voiced optimism that the dialogue will result in tangible improvements, particularly affecting operations in Tuobodom, Techiman North District. They indicated a willingness to work with the ministry on any initiatives that will come up.

The impasse in tomato distribution has been a source of concern for farmers and consumers alike, with significant economic implications for all parties involved.
