Ghana is facing a worrying surge in road accidents, with a total of 13,000 cases recorded between January and November this year, according to the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research, and Training at the MTTD, described the figures as “perplexing” and “deeply alarming,” especially as the country approaches the busy Christmas season.

The crashes involved over 22,000 vehicles, encompassing private cars, commercial vehicles, and a significant number of motorcycles. Chief Supt. Obeng highlighted that motorcycle-related incidents are a major contributor to both severe injuries and fatalities.

A total of 13,000 people sustained injuries in these accidents during the 11-month period, many requiring extensive medical care. “The scale and severity of these injuries are placing a considerable strain on families and our healthcare system,” he stated.

Tragically, 2,429 lives have been lost in road traffic crashes this year. The data reveals a disproportionate impact on men, with 1,937 male deaths compared to 492 female deaths. Many of these fatalities involve young adults.

Pedestrians are also particularly vulnerable, with 550 deaths reported. “Many of these pedestrian deaths are linked to motorcycle crashes,” Chief Supt. Obeng revealed during an interview on Channel One TV.

With the Yuletide season approaching – a period traditionally marked by increased road traffic and accidents – Chief Supt. Obeng warned that the risks will escalate if immediate action isn’t taken.

“The national road safety problem in Ghana calls for all hands on deck,” he emphasized. “The continuous rise in crashes clearly demonstrates that our current safety measures are insufficient.”
