Health Ministry Launches Initiative to Boost Local Pharmaceutical Production

Ghana has launched a significant project aimed at bolstering its capacity to manufacture vaccines and pharmaceuticals locally. The Vax & Pharm Ghana Project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Health (MoH), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the European Union (EU), was officially unveiled today.

The initiative is a key component of Ghana’s 10-year National Vaccine Manufacturing Roadmap, and aligns with the African Union’s ambitious goal of achieving 60% local vaccine production by 2040. Currently, the nation imports over 70% of its medicines and a staggering 99% of its vaccines.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Desmond Boateng, emphasized the need for self-reliance in healthcare. “Health security cannot be outsourced. Access to essential medicines and vaccines must not depend on global supply chains or the goodwill of others. Today, Ghana takes a decisive step toward building our own capacity,” he stated.

Dr. Fiona Braka, the WHO Country Representative for Ghana, hailed the project as a “defining moment” not just for Ghana but for the entire African region. She pointed out the continent’s immense need, currently producing only 0.1% of its vaccine requirements despite representing 25% of global demand.

“WHO remains committed to providing Ghana with the requisite technical support, technology transfer, regulatory capacity-building, and global best practices to ensure that locally manufactured vaccines meet international standards,” Dr. Braka affirmed.

Representing the EU, Mr. Timothy Nolan reaffirmed the Union’s strong partnership with Ghana, highlighting Team Europe’s commitment of €2 billion across Africa to support vaccine and pharmaceutical manufacturing. He lauded Ghana’s leadership and expressed optimism about its potential to evolve into a regional pharmaceutical hub.

The Ministry of Health also acknowledged the crucial support of the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the National Vaccine Institute, and the private sector in driving this national agenda. The launch was attended by high-ranking officials from these institutions, as well as key development partners.
