A governance analyst, Senyo Amekplenu, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of exhibiting “double standards” in its approach to Ghana’s lithium deal negotiations.
Speaking on the AM Show, Mr. Amekplenu, who is a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, argued that the NDC’s current support for a 5% stake in the lithium agreement is at odds with their previous criticisms of the NPP for accepting less favourable terms.
According to him, the NDC’s stance “shatters their claims of better leadership” and casts doubt on their consistency regarding natural resource governance. “The lithium deal has exposed the hypocrisy of the NDC as they settle for 5%, far below the 10% they once criticised the NPP for,” he stated. “It has revealed their double standards and incompetence.”
The lithium agreement was withdrawn on December 10, 2023, for further review, sparking renewed debate about whether Ghana is securing adequate value for its mineral resources. While the Majority in Parliament maintains the withdrawal aims to achieve better deals, analysts suggest the ongoing disputes often obscure the line between political rhetoric and concrete policy.
Mr. Amekplenu urged Parliament and the Minerals Commission to prioritize transparency and ensure any revised agreement delivers lasting benefits to Ghanaians, rather than becoming a platform for partisan politics. He emphasized the need for clarity and honesty from all political actors as Ghana seeks to capitalize on the growing global demand for critical minerals.
He added that Ghanaians deserve to know the full details of the negotiations and the rationale behind the decisions made, ensuring accountability and fostering trust in the process.
