Afenyo‑Markin - Hawks Agenda Ignores Ghana Development

Politics

Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, the minority leader in Parliament, sent a letter to President John Mahama marking the first anniversary of the December 7, 2024 presidential election.

Entitled “One Year After: Ghana’s Democracy at a Crossroads,” the letter warns that the “hawks” steering the government’s agenda are focused on retribution rather than long‑term development.

“The hawks who currently appear to be driving your government’s agenda have no interest in Ghana’s long‑term development,” the MP wrote, adding that their horizon extends only to “the next arrest, the next removal, the next demonstration of power.”

Afenyo‑Markin cautioned the President that the ruling party’s majority of 189 seats, while a sign of public goodwill, is not infinite and is being wasted on settling scores instead of creating opportunities.

“Governance must rise above partisan battles,” he said, stressing that Ghana cannot afford distractions amid global uncertainty and heightened national expectations.

The letter calls on President Mahama to empower moderate members of the NDC, listen to their patriotic conviction and prioritize nation‑building projects that will benefit future generations.

Political analysts note that the NDC’s return to power after a decade is a rare second‑term opportunity, and the tone of the letter reflects internal pressure to shift from a culture of vengeance to one of development.

Both the President’s office and the minority leader have not yet issued public responses. The matter is expected to feature in upcoming parliamentary debates and could shape the policy agenda for the remainder of Mahama’s term.
