President Mahama Highlights Need for Economic Independence at Kenya’s Independence Day

Nairobi, Kenya – Former President John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday, December 12, stressed the importance of securing economic independence for Africa, while serving as the guest of honour at Kenya’s annual Independence Day celebrations.

The event, held in Nairobi, commemorated Kenya’s independence from British colonial rule. In his address, President Mahama acknowledged the struggles of past generations, stating, “Our forebears won us political independence.”

He further emphasised that the onus now lies on the current African leadership to build upon that foundation. “It is the responsibility of our current generation of African leadership to win economic independence and prosperity for our people,” he stated.

President Mahama’s remarks come at a time when many African nations are seeking to diversify their economies and reduce dependence on foreign aid. The call for economic liberation resonated strongly with attendees at the event.

Details regarding specific commitments or collaborations discussed during the visit were not immediately available. However, officials indicated that the former President engaged in bilateral discussions with Kenyan counterparts on matters of mutual interest.

The Independence Day celebrations featured colourful displays of Kenyan culture and a grand parade. President Mahama was warmly received by Kenyan President William Ruto and other dignitaries.
