Madueke Scores Twice as Arsenal Remain Unbeaten

International

Noni Madueke was the star of the night, scoring twice as Arsenal defeated Club Brugge to maintain a perfect record in the Champions League and move closer to securing a spot in the knockout stages.

Manager Mikel Arteta made five changes to the team that suffered a loss to Aston Villa over the weekend, and it was Madueke who seized the opportunity, opening the scoring with a brilliant strike. The England winger skillfully evaded a defender before unleashing a powerful shot from 20 yards that rattled the crossbar and went in.

Club Brugge attempted to challenge Arsenal’s altered defence just before halftime, but goalkeeper David Raya was up to the task, making crucial saves from Christos Tzolis and Aleksandar Stankovic to preserve the Gunners’ lead.

Madueke doubled Arsenal’s advantage just two minutes into the second half, heading in a precise cross from Martin Zubimendi. Gabriel Martinelli then added a third in the 56th minute with a stunning curled effort, effectively sealing the victory.

The match also marked a significant milestone for Arsenal, with Gabriel Jesus making his return after a 342-day absence due to an ACL injury. Adding to the positive night, 16-year-old Marli Salmon was given his first-team debut.

Jesus nearly capped his comeback with a goal, but his late strike from the edge of the box unfortunately hit the bar.

With this win, Arsenal now have 18 points, surpassing the total needed to finish in the top eight last season. This strong performance suggests they will likely avoid the play-offs in February and can focus on preparing for the round of 16.

Rotation Proves Effective

Following calls from supporters for squad rotation due to a mounting injury list and a demanding schedule, Arteta responded by making five changes to the starting lineup. Christian Norgaard partnered with Piero Hincapie at centre-back – the seventh different central defensive pairing used by Arteta this season.

While the performance wasn’t flawless and periods of the game lacked intensity, Arsenal’s strong league position meant they could navigate these challenges. They successfully weathered a difficult spell just before halftime.

Arsenal dominated the second half, with goals from Madueke and Martinelli showcasing their attacking prowess. It was a professional display that continued their excellent form in the Champions League.

The comfortable lead allowed Arteta to introduce Gabriel Jesus, who impressed during his 30 minutes on the pitch. He showed more spark than Viktor Gyokeres, who had a quieter night, leaving Arteta with intriguing options for the busy Christmas fixture period.

With a congested schedule ahead, this match, alongside the upcoming game against Wolves, provides Arteta with the opportunity to share playing time and manage the workload of his squad.
