Ghana has secured a critical step towards economic recovery, signing its seventh bilateral debt restructuring agreement with the Czech Republic today.
The agreement was formalised by Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, and René Jakl, Director of the Claims and Recoveries Department at the Czech Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation (EGAP). This deal aims to alleviate Ghana’s debt burden and foster renewed economic ties.
Dr. Forson expressed Ghana’s profound gratitude to the Czech government and its people, emphasizing the deepening and long-standing relationship between the two nations. He stated, “We appreciate the Czech Republic’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s economic stability.”
René Jakl echoed these sentiments, describing the signing as a “new chapter in bilateral cooperation, creating space for future engagements and potentially increased support for Ghana’s development agenda.”
The ceremony was overseen by the Czech Ambassador to Ghana, Pavel Bílek, and attended by key officials from Ghana’s Ministry of Finance. The specifics of the debt relief are expected to be disclosed in the coming days, offering more clarity on the impact for Ghana.
This agreement marks another milestone in Ghana’s broader efforts to restructure its debt and regain economic footing, following similar deals with other bilateral creditors. Officials say the government remains committed to responsible fiscal management and securing a sustainable debt profile.
