The Ministry of Transport has begun deploying additional buses on four key Accra routes during evening rush hour, in a move aimed at alleviating the daily transportation struggles faced by commuters.
Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari announced the immediate deployment on December 10, stating it will improve safety, reduce lengthy wait times, and address the issue of inflated fares charged by some commercial drivers.
Speaking to journalists in Parliament, Minister Bukari explained that the Ministry is collaborating with Intercity STC Coaches Limited to “mop up” long-distance buses returning to Accra and redeploy them on busy intra-city routes.
“We are going to employ some buses commencing from today, 10th December,” he said. “We will ensure that these buses are available during peak hours to help our commuters get home safely.”
Under the new arrangement, a minimum of eight buses will be added to each of the following corridors between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.:
The Minister indicated that the Ministry intends to increase the number of buses in the coming weeks to ensure all commuters are safely transported home. “We’ll be able to pick all our commuters home safely,” he added.
For months, Accra commuters have faced significant challenges securing transport during peak hours, often being subjected to substantial fare increases due to the scarcity of vehicles.
The Ministry clarified that this bus deployment is a temporary solution while comprehensive, long-term reforms to the urban transport system are being developed and implemented.
