Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku‑Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritising quality healthcare delivery across all levels as a central pillar of its development agenda.

Speaking at the inauguration of a GH₵2 billion mental health and wellness centre for women in Kumasi and its environs, located at Boadi near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Opoku‑Agyemang highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare, expand the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), and modernise health facilities nationwide.

“The inauguration of this modern centre is a practical response to the growing demand for integrated medical and mental healthcare services,” she stated. “It is poised to significantly contribute to our country’s health sector.”

The facility, a collaborative effort between the KGL Group and the EVE Medical Foundation, is designed to offer a dignified and professional environment for individuals seeking mental health support.

Prof. Opoku‑Agyemang noted the evolving healthcare landscape, shaped by factors such as pandemics, advancements in digital medicine, ethical considerations, and increasing population demands.

She further revealed that Ghana recently hosted the African Health Sovereignty Summit, signalling a strategic shift towards sustainable domestic health financing, reducing reliance on external aid.

To address chronic lifelong conditions not covered by the NHIS, the government has also launched the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. “This fund will provide vital financial assistance to patients battling non-communicable diseases such as cancers, diabetes, strokes, and kidney failure,” the Vice President explained.

The Medical Trust Fund aims to bolster Ghana’s health infrastructure through investments in medical equipment, specialised training, and research, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all Ghanaians, regardless of their socioeconomic status or location.

Prof. Opoku‑Agyemang emphasised the crucial role of partnerships in advancing healthcare development, commending the KGL Group and EVE Medical Foundation for their dedication to addressing the mental health needs of the population.

Chairman of the KGL Group, Alex Apau Dadey, underscored the project as a substantial investment in healthcare delivery. “This is our commitment to ensuring that no Ghanaian is denied access to quality healthcare,” he said.

The centre boasts a comprehensive range of facilities, including consulting rooms for psychiatric services, therapy and counselling units, in-patient wards, diagnostic services, a pharmacy, rehabilitation spaces, and administrative offices.
