Walewale Hospital Discharges Assaulted Theft Suspect
The Walewale Municipal Hospital has discharged a 30-year-old assault victim, Sambor Umar, after failing to locate his relatives for over a week.
Mr. Umar was admitted on December 1st with severe injuries sustained in an assault in Wulugu, North East Region. He had been accused of attempted theft, according to hospital sources.
Medical staff confirmed the patient arrived unconscious and required intensive care during his initial days of admission. The case quickly presented logistical and welfare challenges for the already stretched facility.
Despite numerous attempts to contact his family and community members, hospital staff say their efforts were unsuccessful. Relatives allegedly refused to respond to calls or assume responsibility for his ongoing care.
“He was brought here on Monday last week,” Senior Nurse Simon Jabik narrated. “He was assaulted, and the ambulance brought him. When he came, he was unconscious with cutlass wounds on his body. We managed and resuscitated him, and he is a bit stable now. But we are struggling to get in contact with any family member so we can discharge him and send him back to his family.”
Nurse Jabik further explained the strain on the hospital’s resources. “He is now a challenge to us. Our ward is small; there is no space. We have people who need urgent care, and we don’t have space for them.”
The reasons for the community’s lack of response remain unclear. However, hospital staff and a local social welfare officer suggest Mr. Umar may have been disowned before the assault occurred.
Sources indicate his elder brother declined to assist, citing a previous arrest after acting as surety for him in a theft case. The local Assemblyman and community chief also reportedly did not intervene.
Faced with no available guardian and limited capacity for long-term care of non-critical patients, hospital authorities were left with no option but to discharge Mr. Umar. The hospital is now appealing to the Social Welfare Directorate for temporary accommodation and support for the patient.
