Ghanaian journalist Ernest Dela Aglanu has been honoured with the Vital Footage Award at the inaugural Global South Video News Awards held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Mr. Aglanu’s impactful storytelling, captured alongside cameraman Naphtali Baah, earned him the top prize, making him the only African recipient at the prestigious ceremony.

The award was presented on Tuesday, December 9, during the BRIDGE Summit – the world’s largest debut media conference dedicated to showcasing exceptional video journalism from the Global South.

The winning story featured Joseph Ashitey Hammond, a 100-year-old veteran and one of the last surviving members of the Gold Coast Regiment, who served during World War II. The footage powerfully recounts his experiences fighting for the British Empire.

Mr. Hammond also shared a poignant account of the neglect faced by African soldiers following the war, and his vivid recollection of the pivotal 1948 Crossroads shooting, a key event in Ghana’s independence journey.

The Vital Footage Award recognizes footage considered essential for accurately and meaningfully telling stories, giving voice to perspectives that challenge conventional understanding. “This award is a testament to the power of visual storytelling and the importance of amplifying voices from the Global South,” said a representative from the awards committee.

The event, hosted by media personality Mai Maxwell, drew a distinguished audience of broadcasters, video journalists, and senior media professionals from across the Global South. The judging panel comprised over 20 experts from leading news organizations, including Clarín (Argentina), Hindustan Times (India), Korean Broadcasting System, TeleSUR (Venezuela), and the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation.

Other awardees included Maxi Jonas (Argentina) for Best Camerawork, Enrique Ortiz (Ecuador) for Most Creative Shot, and Masoud Al Jarousha (Palestine) for Exclusive Lens.

Ernest Dela Aglanu’s achievement shines a spotlight on Ghanaian and African journalism, underscoring the critical need to preserve and share the continent’s historical narratives on a global scale.

Mr. Aglanu is a seasoned journalist and strategic media consultant with nearly two decades of experience in both Ghanaian and international media. He has previously worked with The Multimedia Group, Media General, BET Africa, Ruptly, Benzinga, and Glitz Africa, and currently serves as the Ghana lead for Viory International News Agency.
