One person has been seriously injured after a head-on collision at the Legon Underpass in Accra on Thursday, following what preliminary investigations suggest was a tyre burst that caused a driver to lose control and cross into oncoming traffic.
The accident involved two vehicles: GE 2441 Y, which was travelling from Accra towards Madina, and GE 2859, which was heading in the opposite direction from Madina to Accra. According to early reports, a tyre on GE 2441 Y burst as the vehicle entered the underpass, causing the driver to veer into the opposite lane and collide directly with the oncoming car.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported one seriously injured victim to Legon Hospital for treatment. The condition of the injured person has not yet been disclosed by hospital authorities.
The collision caused significant disruption to traffic on the busy Legon-Madina stretch, one of Accra’s most heavily trafficked corridors, particularly during the morning rush. A crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene as police worked to clear the wreckage and restore the flow of vehicles.
Traffic police have launched a formal investigation into the incident. Officers are expected to examine both vehicles, assess the road conditions at the time of the crash, and determine whether mechanical failure, driver error, or a combination of factors contributed to the collision.
The Legon Underpass, which connects the University of Ghana campus to surrounding suburbs, has been the site of multiple accidents in recent years. Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for improved signage, better lighting, and more rigorous vehicle inspection standards to reduce the frequency of such incidents on Accra’s increasingly congested roads.
The incident comes amid broader concerns about road safety across the country. A recent case in the Ashanti Region saw a pastor granted bail after admitting to a charge of careless driving, highlighting the ongoing challenges authorities face in enforcing traffic regulations and holding drivers accountable for dangerous behaviour on the roads.
Police have urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, with particular attention to tyre condition, before embarking on journeys. They also cautioned drivers to reduce speed when navigating the underpass and other sections of the road where visibility may be limited.
