Black Stars Victory Over Panama Sparks Nationwide Celebrations as Fans Turn Eyes to England

Ghana erupted in celebration on Wednesday night after the Black Stars snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L match in Toronto, Canada, sending waves of euphoria across the country and turning attention squarely to Tuesday’s clash with England.

The decisive moment arrived in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Caleb Yirenkyi bundled in a late winner, sparking scenes of unbridled joy both inside the stadium and across neighbourhoods in Accra, Kumasi, and beyond. The goal, assisted by Brandon Thomas-Asante, capped a tense contest in which Ghana had struggled to break down a disciplined Panama defence for much of the evening.

Streets Flooded With Joy

Within minutes of the final whistle, thousands of supporters poured into the streets of Mamprobi, Kaneshie, Weija, Kasoa, and Osu, among other neighbourhoods, waving flags, singing patriotic songs, and dancing in spontaneous displays of national pride. Viewing centres across the capital emptied into roads as fans embraced strangers and honked horns long into the night.

“We never gave up hope because the Black Stars kept pushing until the very end,” said Sampson Owusu, one of the jubilant fans in Kaneshie. “This victory shows the determination of the team.”

Kwame Mensah, a 32-year-old trader, admitted the match had been an anxious affair. “I was nervous throughout the game, but the players showed determination. Beating Panama was important and I believe Ghana can surprise England if we stay focused,” he said.

Fan Confidence Growing Ahead of England

Across the capital, the mood was a mixture of relief and growing optimism. While few fans claimed the performance was flawless, there was widespread agreement that the late winner had revealed a resilience in the squad that could prove decisive against stiffer opposition.

“The mentality the players showed, especially after a tough first half, was impressive,” said Charles Asuman, a mobile-phone repairer in Accra. “That kind of fighting spirit is what you need at a World Cup.”

Nii Laryea, owner of Etradro Motors, offered a more measured assessment. “I want to urge them to face the next two games with the same determination they showed in the second half of the Panama game,” he said. “England is not the England of old. This present generation is living on past glories and I believe with a little more push, we can beat them and qualify.”

Some supporters were even more bullish. Jibril Mohammed predicted that the Black Stars could “go all the way to the semi-finals of the tournament,” while university student Nana Adwoa Yeboah urged caution: “We should not put too much pressure on the players. They have started well and I expect them to give England a tough contest.”

Tactical Questions Loom

Fans and pundits alike are now turning their attention to the tactical decisions that coach Carlos Queiroz will face ahead of the England match. Several supporters called for experienced heads such as Jordan Ayew to be given starting roles, arguing that the team’s second-half performance against Panama offered a blueprint for how to compete against the Three Lions.

Emmanuel Delali Boafo, chief executive of Delali’s Small Chops, struck a pragmatic tone about the road ahead. “Drawing in the next two games could secure qualification to the next round,” he said, while also appealing to the Ghana Football Association to show patience with the coaching setup. “I pray the GFA will keep the coach and allow him to handle the team for a long time.”

With MP Stephen Amoah having already warned the squad against complacency ahead of the England fixture, the national conversation has firmly shifted from celebration to preparation. The match kicks off on Tuesday, June 23, and the entire nation will once again be watching.
