Bagbin Urges Unity in Ghana's Parliament

Politics

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to prioritize transparency, accountability, and collaboration in their legislative duties.

Mr. Bagbin made the call during an informal meeting with the first-time MPs, emphasizing that healthy political debate is vital for a robust democracy. “Ghana has consciously chosen a multiparty system, and differing viewpoints are essential to its strength,” he stated.

He encouraged the MPs to develop expertise in specific legislative areas and actively participate in committee work to effectively represent their constituents. According to the Speaker, parliamentary committees are “the engine of Parliament,” requiring diligent research and preparation for impactful lawmaking.

Addressing common misunderstandings, Mr. Bagbin clarified that parliamentary privileges and immunities are “not personal favors but safeguards for the people’s voice.” He also voiced concerns about the welfare of local assembly members, promising to work towards strengthening decentralization structures as outlined in the constitution.

To foster a more open and accountable Parliament, Mr. Bagbin revealed plans for televised sessions involving senior MPs, the media, and the public. He further defended his choice of attire, stating that it reflects Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and parliamentary tradition.

The Speaker commended the new MPs for their commitment and pledged his full support as they navigate their roles, develop their leadership skills, and uphold the highest ethical standards in legislative practice.
