Physician Calls for Safe Sex as HIV Cases Rise in Ghana

A specialist family physician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital urged young Ghanaians to practice safe sex after a rise in HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, speaking at a free medical screening event at Kumasi City Mall on December 2, 2025.

Dr Kofi Frimpong Oppong, medical director of FamCare Clinic, highlighted that condom use remains a vital and cost‑effective tool for preventing HIV and STIs.

“I strongly urge the youth to heed this advice, adopt responsible habits and grow into maturity, eventually settling with one partner,” Dr Oppong said, warning against casual, unprotected sex, promiscuity and illicit drug use.

The free screening, organised by FamCare Clinic, offered Asokwa residents and mall shoppers malaria tests, blood‑sugar and blood‑pressure checks, BMI assessments and Hepatitis B screening, alongside counselling, prescriptions and refreshments.

Explaining the purpose, Dr Oppong added, “It was specifically designed to provide an opportunity for residents in the Asokwa area, particularly shoppers at the City Mall, to assess their health conditions.”

Participants praised the initiative; one young woman remarked, “We appreciate the free checks and the honest talk. It makes us feel cared for and gives us the information we need.”

The drive comes as the Ashanti Region records a steady increase in HIV prevalence, underscoring the need for sustained public‑health education and preventive measures.

Health officials say continued community outreach and regular screening are essential to curb the upward trend and protect Ghana’s youth.
