Ghanaian YouTuber Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon, known as Wode Maya, is redefining cultural diplomacy through digital storytelling, showcasing Africa’s rich tapestry to a global audience.

Echoing the African proverb, “Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter,” Wode Maya is actively reshaping the narrative of the continent, challenging long-held stereotypes perpetuated by historical imbalances.

Born on March 3, 1990, in Ahekofi, a village in Kofikrom in the Western Region, Wode Maya’s journey began with a desire to counter negative perceptions of Africans while studying Aeronautical Engineering at Shenyang Aerospace University in China. He later honed his Mandarin skills at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU).

His YouTube channel, now boasting nearly two million subscribers, has evolved into a platform for celebrating African culture, travel, and entrepreneurship. Wode Maya has interviewed prominent figures including Presidents H.E John Dramani Mahama and H.E John Kufuor, Kenyan lawyer Prof. PLO Lumumba, and business leaders Allen Onyema (Air Peace) and Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma (Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing).

Through his “Africa to the World” project, he documents the continent’s diversity, from bustling cities to remote communities. On October 1, 2025, the Government of Ghana, through Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, formally recognized his role by conferring diplomatic passports upon him and other creative figures.

In Accra, Wode Maya’s “Experience Ghana” series highlights iconic landmarks like the Black Star Gate and Black Star Square, symbols of Ghana’s independence. He also featured the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, a crucial site commemorating the nation’s first president.

Venturing into the Volta Region, he explored Nogokpo, known for its traditional spiritual beliefs, speaking with local leaders about its cultural significance. He showcased a “luxury glass house” accommodation in Anomabo, Central Region, promoting Ghana’s coastal tourism.

His travels extend to the Western Region, featuring Takoradi and Sekondi-Takoradi, broadening perspectives on Ghana’s regional diversity. Beyond Ghana, Wode Maya has visited Tanzania, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and showcasing the Masai Mara, highlighting East Africa’s natural beauty and shared heritage.

A 2025 visit to Sierra Leone included historical and cultural landmarks in Freetown, boosting the country’s global visibility. He also explored Botswana, connecting with the Ghanaian diaspora, and Namibia, documenting the traditions of the Himba people.

His video of Lesotho, dubbed the “Kingdom in the Sky,” challenges stereotypes by showcasing its unique mountain culture and even snowfall. Similarly, his documentation of Abuna Yemata Guh in Ethiopia highlights ancient African architectural prowess.

Wode Maya exemplifies cultural diplomacy by showcasing arts, heritage, and history, fostering international understanding through digital media. He promotes national unity by connecting diverse communities and inspiring pride among the diaspora.

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has partnered with Wode Maya to promote destinations like Cape Coast Castle, Kakum National Park, and Mole National Park. He has also collaborated with the Sierra Leone Tourism Board to highlight its attractions.

Furthermore, Wode Maya champions local businesses, featuring farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs, providing them with international exposure. His work inspires youth entrepreneurship and encourages investment in Africa.

In an era dominated by digital media, Wode Maya’s work demonstrates the power of positive storytelling in shaping perceptions of Ghana and Africa. His efforts, akin to Fuse ODJ’s musical celebration of “54 Countries,” are essential for safeguarding and promoting the pan-African dream.
