Four students of the Wa Technical Institute in the Upper West Region have been arrested in connection with the violent disturbances that rocked the school in November.
Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday, December 9, while speaking on Channel One TV. He described the incident as a serious breach of conduct, resulting in significant damage to school property.
The Institute was temporarily shut down on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, following the riot which occurred during prep time. Students, returning from classes, damaged administration offices and school buses.
According to DCOP Yiribaare, the chaos stemmed from students’ resistance to internal disciplinary measures. He explained that a routine enforcement of school regulations – specifically regarding unauthorised uniforms and mobile phone use – escalated after repeated warnings were ignored.
“What should have been a simple enforcement of rules turned into a full-blown riot,” DCOP Yiribaare stated.
Saaka Adams, acting Regional Director of Ghana TVET and Principal of the Wa Technical Institute, said the students were traumatised by the events. The school was closed for a week to allow them time to recover.
“We needed to give the students a break to process what happened and regain their composure,” Adams explained.
Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, visited the campus on Saturday, November 22, and expressed his disappointment at the extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the school’s domestic bursar following reports that food items belonging to the institution were found in her possession. DCOP Yiribaare indicated that the case would be sent to court if she is found culpable.
