University of Ghana VC Calls on Alumni to Enhance IT Facilities

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has reiterated the need for robust alumni support to enhance the university’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure.

Professor Amfo made the call when the 1993 Year Group, known as the Pacesetters, paid a courtesy visit to her. She lauded the group’s recent donation of laptops as a “practical and exemplary model” of how alumni can contribute to their alma mater.

“We need sustained alumni support to strengthen our IT infrastructure,” she stated. “What the 1993 group has done shows how old students can make a real difference.”

The donation forms part of the group’s contribution to the ‘One Student, One Laptop’ initiative, aimed at bridging the digital gap and ensuring all students have access to technology for learning.

Margaret Donkor, President of the 1993 Year Group, explained that the gesture was motivated by the increasing disparity in access to essential learning tools. “We wanted to bring something that benefits the entire university community,” she said. “Not everyone can afford a laptop, yet the need for technology is greater than ever.”

Professor Peter Quartey, Chairman of the group, further emphasized the importance of digital access, recalling how the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted existing inequalities. “COVID really showed us how much our students depend on technology and how unequal access can be,” he said. “Many still struggle to afford laptops, and that makes it difficult for them to keep up with modern academic demands.”

The 1993 Year Group has a long history of supporting digital inclusion efforts at the University of Ghana, through both financial contributions and advocacy. They have pledged to continue partnering with the university to expand technology access and address the digital divide.
