Accra, Ghana – In a move aimed at revolutionizing human resource practices across the nation, the University of Ghana, in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management (CIHRM), has established an HR Professorial Chair. The ambitious initiative, unveiled at a recent press conference at the University of Ghana Business School, seeks to address pressing challenges such as talent shortages, declining ethical standards in the workplace, and the persistent gap between academic theory and practical application within the Ghanaian context. The creation of the HR Professorial Chair signals a new era for Human Resource Management in Ghana, promising to cultivate a more strategic and effective workforce.

The initiative also underscores the critical need for financial backing to sustain its objectives, as emphasized by Dr. Francis Eduku during the launch. The new HR Professorial Chair aims to serve as a catalyst for change, fostering research, promoting ethical practices, and ultimately contributing to Ghana’s national development agenda.

One of the primary reasons for establishing the Professorial Chair in Human Resource Management is to directly confront the issue of talent shortages that plague various sectors in Ghana. Despite numerous job vacancies, many organizations struggle to find qualified candidates, contributing to rising unemployment rates. This initiative seeks to bridge that gap by fostering a deeper understanding of HR practices and developing strategies to identify, nurture, and retain talent within the country.

Furthermore, the HR Professorial Chair is designed to strengthen HR research, training, and policy engagement at the national level. By providing a platform for rigorous academic inquiry and collaboration with industry professionals, the Chair will contribute to the development of evidence-based HR policies that are tailored to the specific needs of the Ghanaian workforce.

Addressing the divide between academic HR theories and their practical application in the Ghanaian workplace is another core objective of this initiative. The Chair will facilitate the translation of theoretical knowledge into actionable strategies that can be implemented by HR practitioners across various organizations, ensuring that HR practices are both effective and relevant.

CIHRM is taking proactive steps to elevate the professionalism of HR practitioners in Ghana. Mrs. Florence Hutchful highlighted CIHRM’s initiatives, including the upcoming rollout of national HR standards, designed to set a benchmark for excellence in the field.

Ethical considerations are also a key focus. Mrs. Hutchful emphasized the importance of character alongside competence, stating, “Staff development must focus not only on competencies but also on shaping ethical behavior.” This underscores a commitment to fostering a culture of integrity and responsibility within the HR profession.

Context-specific research will be a cornerstone of the Chair’s activities. Mrs. Hutchful noted, “This Professorial Chair will drive context-specific research to inform effective HR policy and practice, an important step toward Ghana’s growth agenda.” This targeted research will ensure that HR policies and practices are tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities present in the Ghanaian context.

Mrs. Ellen Hagan added to the discussion: “We must support research and create frameworks for key initiatives…This Chair is dedicated to Human Resource Management, which shows how seriously we’re beginning to take people management in this country.”

Sustaining the HR Professorial Chair over its five-year tenure requires a significant financial commitment. Dr. Francis Eduku stressed the importance of this support, stating, “We need a significant financial commitment to make this a success. This Chair is a game changer, and we must all contribute to realize its full impact.” The call for financial support underscores the collective responsibility of stakeholders in ensuring the success of this transformative initiative.

Dr. Eduku also challenged the prevailing education system, advocating for the introduction of HR concepts at the Senior High School level. “Why should people only study HR at the university? It’s something we need to challenge the minds of policymakers about – HR must be embedded in national education strategies.”

Professor Obi Berko Damoah highlighted the University of Ghana’s dedication to contributing to society. “As a higher education institution, we partner with professional bodies to show our contribution to society. This partnership with CIHRM is a demonstration of that vision.” This collaboration exemplifies the University’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges and fostering national development.

Professor Obi Berko Damoah further emphasized that “The launch of the HR Professorial Chair laid the foundation for a future-ready HR ecosystem.”

To further engage the public and build momentum around the HR Professorial Chair, a series of events are planned throughout the year. These include a Corporate Walk on June 14, an HR Conference on June 19, an HR Community Forum on July 17, a CEO Roundtable on August 22, a Public Lecture on October 16, and an End-of-Year Review on November 22. These events aim to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and encourage participation from various stakeholders.

The launch of the HR Professorial Chair at the University of Ghana marks a significant milestone for Human Resource Management in Ghana. By focusing on research, ethics, and practical application, this initiative has the potential to transform the HR landscape and contribute to Ghana’s overall growth. The success of the HR Professorial Chair depends on the continued support of industry leaders, academics, and policymakers. It is a crucial step forward, and its progress will be closely monitored as it unfolds.
