The 1993 Year Group of the University of Ghana (UG93) has presented ten brand-new laptops to the University, bolstering the Vice-Chancellor’s ‘One Student, One Laptop’ initiative.

The donation, made as part of their 32nd homecoming celebration, aims to improve digital access for students. UG93 President, Mrs. Margaret Donkor, speaking at the presentation, described her group as “pacesetters” with a long history of supporting their alma mater.

“We’ve always believed in giving back,” Mrs. Donkor stated. She recalled the group’s previous significant contribution of over GH₵95,000 to the University Hospital during their 30th anniversary.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, warmly received the laptops, expressing gratitude for the support of UG93. She highlighted that the donation directly aligns with the University’s strategic goals, including enhancing the student experience and promoting research.

“We are thankful to the 1993 year group for supporting our overarching strategic priorities,” Prof. Amfo said. “These laptops will reach the right hands and empower our students.”

Prof. Peter Quartey, Chairperson of the ‘One Student, One Laptop’ Implementation Committee, emphasized the importance of the program in preparing students for a digital world. “So far, we have received 956 laptops and 645 have already been distributed,” he revealed, adding that the selection process prioritizes students in need based on academic merit and financial circumstances.

The UG93 Year Group’s homecoming weekend is scheduled for December 4-5, 2025, with the theme “Back to Basics: Towards Continuing Good Health.” Vice-President of the group, Prof. Cynthia Akwei, outlined plans for a virtual seminar on midlife transitions, a health and wellness session including a mobile gym and health walk, and a networking picnic at the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER).

Mrs. Lydia Anowah Nyako-Danquah, Director of Academic Affairs, concluded by thanking UG93 for their continued generosity. She noted that the laptops will significantly aid students facing financial challenges in their academic pursuits.
