"There Is Rice At Home" Returns to Stage December 18

Accra-based multidisciplinary artist Joewackle J. Kusi is set to restage his critically acclaimed stage play, ‘There Is Rice At Home’, at the Alliance Française, Accra, on December 18, 2025.

The play, which premiered as the closing performance of the Alliance Française Performing Arts Festival, offers a humorous yet poignant exploration of grief and Ghanaian funeral traditions. It follows a police officer who, on the eve of his friend’s funeral, encounters Death personified, leading to a captivating dialogue about life, loss, and love.

‘There Is Rice At Home’ features compelling performances from Senanu Gbedawo, Adomaa, Godwin Namboh, and Gina Castel, accompanied by original music composed and performed by Adomaa. The production seamlessly blends storytelling, music, and dance to create a truly immersive experience.

According to a statement from Church Of Stories, the production company, the play is “a riveting story of friendship, grief, and love.”

Joewackle J. Kusi, who co-directed and co-wrote the play with Inyang Edoho, is known for his work across film, audio, and theatre, all focused on telling uniquely Ghanaian stories. His previous projects include the films ‘Lucky’ and ‘Boys No Dey Cry’, the audio drama ‘Goodbye Gold’, and the award-winning ‘Nyame Mma’, which was selected for the 77th Cannes Film Festival – Short Film Corner, among others.

Kusi was also a fellow at the 2024 International Sound Documentary Summer Program in France and has been selected for the 2025 Durban Talents program. The restaging of ‘There Is Rice At Home’ promises to be another significant addition to his growing body of work.

Two shows are scheduled for December 18th, 2025, at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm at Alliance Francaise, Accra.
