TCDA Establishes 16,000 Hectares of Tree Crops Across Ghana

The Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) has unveiled a major initiative, ‘The Legacy Project,’ aiming to establish Tree Crop Enclaves across all 16 regions of Ghana.

The project, approved at a recent board meeting, will see a minimum of 1,000 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of six key tree crops – cashew, oil palm, coconut, shea, mango, and rubber – in each region, accumulating a total of 16,000 hectares nationwide.

This ambitious scheme is a cornerstone of former President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for transforming and industrializing Ghana’s tree crops sector. According to officials, it’s intended to be a defining legacy of his leadership.

Each region will concentrate on growing crops best suited to its specific environmental conditions – soil type, climate, and existing production capabilities. “This approach ensures efficiency and maximizes productivity, aligning with government policies to sustainably develop all six value chains,” a TCDA statement explained.

The Legacy Project is expected to significantly boost livelihoods in rural communities through job creation, value addition, and the growth of agro-processing industries. The TCDA estimates that thousands of direct and indirect jobs will be generated, with a particular focus on empowering the youth and women.

Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, the TCDA Chief Executive, recently briefed the Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs on the project, with a detailed focus on the oil palm sector. Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Wa East, praised the TCDA’s leadership, stating, “This is a transformational step for Ghana’s tree crops sector.” The Ranking Member, Isaac Yaw Opoku, MP for Offinso South, echoed this sentiment, endorsing the initiative.

Governing board member, Lawyer Sadat Kishiwale, lauded Dr. Okrah’s vision, adding that the new plantations could act as crucial cover for forests degraded by mining activity. “This project is positioned to redefine the future of Ghana’s tree crops industry, aligning with President Mahama’s national development vision,” he said.

The initiative aims to boost export growth and contribute to broader local economic development.
