Government Introduces New Sports Funding Bill

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has presented the long-awaited Sports Fund Bill to Parliament, a move expected to revolutionize funding for all sporting disciplines in Ghana.

The Minister, who has consistently advocated for a dedicated legal framework to bolster sports development since assuming office, believes the Bill will accelerate growth within the sector. He emphasized that the Fund is crucial for the nation’s sporting progress.

Addressing Parliament, Adams highlighted the persistent lack of funding as a significant impediment, particularly for sports beyond football. “It’s quite clear that over the years, this House has had challenges dealing with issues affecting funding in our sports generally,” he stated. “Funding is mostly secured for football, when indeed, sports encompass much more.”

He acknowledged that previous attempts to establish sustainable sports financing structures had been unsuccessful. “There have been many attempts to put together a funding system that will enable the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to execute its programmes, bringing on board more sporting disciplines and supporting them,” he explained.

According to Minister Adams, the proposed Sports Fund will finally address these longstanding constraints. “When approved, we will overcome the challenges of funding our sports, enabling growth and supporting other progressive activities in the country,” he added.

For years, Ghanaian athletes have faced difficulties securing adequate support for international competitions. Federations and associations outside of football have largely relied on inconsistent donations and limited sponsorships to survive.

Adams expressed confidence that the Bill’s passage will provide the necessary financial foundation to overcome these challenges and foster comprehensive sports development nationwide.
