Speaker Holds Orientation for New MPs, Urges Mentorship

Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin met with first‑term Members of Parliament on Thursday to boost collaboration and open lines of communication between his office and the newly elected legislators.

Bagbin announced that similar engagement sessions will soon be extended to continuing MPs, media personnel and the wider public through televised broadcasts, signalling a push for greater transparency.

Speaking at the session, the Speaker reaffirmed the vision of the ninth Parliament, stressing that openness, inclusivity, integrity, honesty, civility and active participation are the pillars of a thriving democratic culture. “Our aim is to nurture a legislative environment where every voice is heard and every action is accountable,” he said.

The Speaker highlighted that such engagements are vital for building mutual understanding and enhancing legislative efficiency. He urged senior MPs to mentor newcomers, proposing a structured mentorship programme that would allow experienced legislators to share knowledge and practical insights with first‑time MPs.

Bagbin observed that Parliament has gradually shifted from excessive partisanship to a more mature, multiparty democratic setting. While encouraging new MPs to retain their party identities, he called on them to prioritise national development over narrow political interests.

His remarks underscored Parliament’s commitment to a culture that balances partisan concerns with broader governance, policy‑making and accountability goals. “We must all approach our duties with professionalism and a genuine dedication to public service,” he added.

The engagement was attended by key parliamentary officials, including Clerk to Parliament Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Deputy Majority Whip Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe and Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the initiative.

Bagbin’s outreach is expected to continue throughout the parliamentary term, with further sessions and televised broadcasts slated to keep both legislators and citizens informed about parliamentary business.
