Sonrise Christian High School Achieves 92% Tertiary Qualification Rate

Education

Sonrise Christian High School students have once again excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), achieving a remarkable 92% tertiary qualification rate for 2025. This significantly surpasses the national average of 60.35%, according to provisional results released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

The figures are based on the analysis of results from 225 candidates, out of the 237 who sat for the exams. WAEC has withheld the results of twelve candidates due to outstanding fees.

A substantial 81.3% of Sonrise students secured grades from A1 to C6 – the minimum requirement for direct entry into Ghanaian universities for degree programmes. This places the school approximately 32 percentage points above the national standard.

Authorities at Sonrise emphasized that the WASSCE examinations were conducted under the full supervision of external WAEC officials, adhering to the council’s strict protocols for private institutions.

The school’s performance consistently exceeded national benchmarks across all core subjects. In English Language, 97.3% of Sonrise students achieved A1-C6 grades, compared to a national average of 69%. Notably, no Sonrise student recorded a failing grade (F9) in the subject.

The gap was even wider in Core Mathematics, a subject notoriously challenging for Ghanaian students. While only about 49% of candidates nationwide attained university-qualifying grades, 81.3% of Sonrise candidates did so. Furthermore, an additional 10.7% obtained a D7, enabling them to pursue HND and other diploma programmes.

“Given the crucial role of Core Mathematics in tertiary admissions and its strong correlation with overall academic success, we are confident that 92% of our graduates are eligible for higher education,” a school official stated.

In Integrated Science, where the national pass rate is around 58%, Sonrise students achieved an impressive 93.8%. Similarly, in Social Studies, Sonrise’s 87.1% pass rate outstripped the national average of 56%.

The results also revealed a high level of attainment across elective subjects, with only three E8 grades and no F9s recorded in the 29 subjects offered.

This consistent excellence is not new. Sonrise Christian High School has historically maintained an average tertiary qualification rate of around 92%, based on A1-D7 grades over the years.

Education analysts indicate that Sonrise’s strong showing in Core Mathematics and Integrated Science is particularly noteworthy, given these subjects’ traditionally low national pass rates.

The school attributes its success to a combination of factors including investment in quality teachers, rigorous academic supervision, targeted support for struggling learners and a disciplined learning environment rooted in faith-based values.

“We believe that our holistic approach, focusing on both academic achievement and personal development, is key to our students’ success,” the school authority added.

As Ghana strives to improve secondary education outcomes and increase access to tertiary education, Sonrise Christian High School’s 2025 WASSCE performance underscores the vital role played by private institutions in national educational advancement.
