Accra, Ghana – A ripple of excitement is spreading through Ghana’s literary community as the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project (SEHP) announces the opening of submissions for the 3rd edition of the Samira Bawumia Literature Prize (SBLP). This biennial competition offers a unique platform for young Ghanaian voices to be heard, providing not only recognition but also a pathway to publication.

For aspiring writers aged 15 to 30, the SBLP represents more than just a contest; it’s an opportunity to contribute to the growing tapestry of African literature. This year’s theme, “Reimagine Africa’s Folktales for the Next Generation,” invites young minds to breathe new life into the stories that have shaped the continent’s cultural identity.

The Samira Bawumia Literature Prize is dedicated to identifying, nurturing, and showcasing the talent of young Ghanaian writers. Organized by the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project (SEHP), the competition’s core mission is to promote African literature crafted by African voices, specifically for young African readers. By celebrating traditional narratives and encouraging fresh perspectives, the SBLP aims to instill a strong sense of identity, ignite curiosity, and honor the rich cultural heritage of Africa through the power of storytelling.

Why should a young Ghanaian writer consider submitting their work to the SBLP? The answer lies in the unparalleled opportunities it provides. Winning or even being shortlisted offers invaluable exposure, paving the way for emerging writers to gain recognition within the literary landscape. Furthermore, selected entries are published in a widely distributed anthology, ensuring that their voices reach a broad audience.

The rewards for excelling in the Samira Bawumia Literature Prize are substantial. In addition to the prestige of being recognized, the top performers receive attractive prizes designed to support their continued literary pursuits. The first-place winner receives a laptop and a cash prize of GHS 5000.00, providing essential tools and resources. The second and third-place winners receive GHS 3000.00 and GHS 2000.00 respectively, while those ranking from 4th to 10th place each receive GHS 1000.00. Beyond the cash prizes, the top thirty (30) shortlisted entries across all categories will be published in the prestigious SBLP anthology, a significant achievement for any emerging writer.

This year’s theme, “Reimagine Africa’s Folktales for the Next Generation,” serves as a creative springboard for writers to explore the depth and breadth of African storytelling. The challenge lies in crafting original and compelling works that resonate with young Ghanaian readers, beginning from age 9.

The competition encourages exploration of several avenues within the theme. Writers can delve into retelling classic African myths and folktales, breathing new life into familiar narratives. Another approach involves exploring and celebrating traditional symbols, weaving them into contemporary stories that connect with young audiences. Furthermore, the theme provides an opportunity to use storytelling to inspire environmental responsibility and climate action, addressing pressing issues through engaging narratives. Finally, writers are encouraged to create compelling African heroes and heroines, serving as positive role models for Ghanaian children and youth.

To be eligible for the Samira Bawumia Literature Prize, applicants must be Ghanaian citizens between the ages of 15 and 30 years.

The submission guidelines are designed to ensure a fair and consistent evaluation process. All entries must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words in length and can be submitted in the genres of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Each individual is limited to one entry (for poetry, up to three poems will be considered as a single submission). Crucially, all submitted works must be unpublished at the time of submission.

The submission portal opens on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and the deadline for all submissions is June 21st, 2025.

Aspiring writers can submit their entries electronically through the official SBLP website: www.sehp.sbawumia.org. The website provides detailed instructions and guidelines for the submission process.

The Samira Bawumia Literature Prize stands as a beacon of opportunity for young Ghanaian writers, offering a platform for recognition, publication, and contribution to the vibrant tapestry of African literature. With the inspiring theme “Reimagine Africa’s Folktales for the Next Generation,” the SBLP invites creativity, cultural exploration, and impactful storytelling. If you meet the eligibility criteria and possess a story yearning to be told, seize this chance to submit your work before the deadline on June 21st, 2025. Visit www.sehp.sbawumia.org to embark on your literary journey. Good luck!
