In a small Ghanaian town, a remarkable transformation has taken place. Where a humble roadside provision shop once stood in Berekuso, a modern healthcare sanctuary now rises, a testament to community dedication and the Rotary Club’s ethos of “Service Above Self.” This $200,000 project, spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Ring Road Central and its partners, promises to reshape healthcare access for generations, offering essential medical services and a beacon of hope in the heart of Ghana. The new healthcare center exemplifies the Rotary Club’s commitment to sustainable community development.
Four years ago, Nana Okyere, the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Ring Road Central, made a fateful discovery. Seeking refreshment, she stumbled upon what she thought was a kiosk, only to find it was the community’s sole health facility. Rotary President Albert Bahum-Wilson recounted, “She discovered Berekuso some four years ago…they said this is a clinic and not a shop.” This chance encounter revealed a critical need.
The existing structure was a far cry from a place of healing. Described as a dilapidated wooden building, it was woefully inadequate to serve the community’s healthcare needs. With government assistance unavailable, the Rotary Club recognized the urgent need to step in and fill the gap. As Emely Amponsah, former Municipal Director of Health Services, explained, “The old facility was very depleting…the space was very small.” The need for a new facility was evident.
The Rotary Club of Ring Road Central, alongside its dedicated partners, committed $200,000 to construct a modern, state-of-the-art health centre. This investment reflects Rotary’s deep commitment to creating lasting impact and fostering sustainable development in the region. The facility is designed to serve the healthcare needs of Berekuso and its surrounding communities for decades to come, addressing the critical deficiencies of the previous clinic and providing adequate space and resources for quality medical care. The health center will greatly improve the standard of healthcare in Berekuso.
For Rotary, this project goes beyond mere infrastructure. It signifies a long-term commitment to sustainability and community development. District Governor Florence Maame Hagan emphasized, “Beyond the bricks and mortar, this project embodies Rotary’s commitment to sustainability…a living, breathing asset.” This new clinic is envisioned as a vibrant, vital part of the community fabric.
Nana Oteng Kuranchie II, the Chief of Berekuso, has pledged the community’s full support for the clinic’s ongoing maintenance. Rotary isn’t stopping with construction. The next phase focuses on equipping the centre with state-of-the-art tools, particularly for maternal and child health. The Rotary Club is actively seeking sponsors to provide top-tier equipment. Rotary Club President Albert Bahum-Wilson affirmed, “We are in discussions with sponsors…we are not packing our tools and going away.” This is a project for the long haul.
Rotary International President-Elect, Mario Cesar Martins de Camargo, visited the new facility and expressed his admiration for the project. He highlighted the potential for further enhancements, particularly in screening processes and equipment. Mario Cesar Martins de Camargo encouraged, “People will come here and see your work and will help you to develop better service…a better life for the people of the community of Berekuso. So, take advantage.” The future of healthcare in Berekuso looks bright.
The transformation of Berekuso’s healthcare from a dilapidated roadside shop to a modern health centre perfectly embodies the power of dedication, collaboration, and Rotary’s unwavering commitment to service. This $200,000 project represents more than just a building; it is a symbol of hope and a tangible demonstration of “Service Above Self.” With the community’s support for ongoing maintenance and Rotary’s plans for future enhancements, Berekuso’s new healthcare sanctuary promises to serve generations to come. Consider supporting Rotary International to help more communities receive the care they deserve.
