Legendary Hollywood filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, have been found dead at their Los Angeles home, authorities have confirmed.
Police responded to the couple’s residence in the upmarket Brentwood neighbourhood of LA on Sunday afternoon following a call for medical assistance. The incident is currently being investigated as a homicide.
Reiner, 78, was celebrated for directing iconic films such as The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. His wife, Michele, 68, was also a creative force, working as an actress, photographer, and producer.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesperson stated in a release to US media. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
While police initially did not release the identities of the deceased, they later confirmed the ages of the individuals found at the scene. According to Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton, both bodies remained inside the home for over six hours while investigators processed the scene.
“We are not releasing any details about the injuries sustained, or if a weapon was involved at this time,” Hamilton said during a news conference Sunday night. “The LA County Coroner’s office will determine the official cause of death.”
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry and political landscape. California Governor Gavin Newsom described Reiner as a “big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.”
Former US President Barack Obama also expressed his condolences, stating, “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people – and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired.”
Rob Reiner began his career in the 1960s and gained widespread recognition for his role as “Meathead” in the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom, All in the Family, earning him two Emmy Awards. He transitioned to directing with the cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, and subsequently helmed a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films.
He recently revisited Spinal Tap with the release of the sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, this September. Reiner was also a co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment.
Prior to marrying Michele in 1989, Reiner was married to Laverne & Shirley actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He is also the adoptive father of Tracy Reiner, Marshall’s daughter. Michele Reiner owned Reiner Light, a photography agency and production house.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the deaths a “devastating loss” and highlighted the couple’s philanthropic work, particularly their support for childhood development and LGBTQ+ advocacy. “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” she said.
