Douglas Boateng to Lead Green Transition in Africa as New Board Chair

Green Communities International (GCI) has appointed Ing. Professor Douglas Boateng as Chairperson of its Board of Trustees, a move expected to bolster the organisation’s leadership and accelerate its Pan-African sustainability agenda.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for GCI, as it seeks to expand its flagship initiatives – the International Conference on Environmental, Social, Governance and Sustainable Development of Africa (ICESDA), the Pan-African Green Movement Programme (PGMP), and the Pan-African Green Awards – amid growing national and continental focus on climate resilience and sustainable development.

According to a statement released by GCI, the appointment of Prof. Boateng signifies a “pivotal season” for the organisation, deepening its commitment to environmental stewardship and social equity across Africa. GCI’s Founder and President, Professor De-Graft Owusu-Manu, stated, “Ing. Professor Boateng’s leadership promises to elevate GCI’s influence, ensuring that conversations translate into measurable impact for communities across Africa.”

Prof. Boateng’s appointment builds on his recent role as Chairperson of the Global Homeland Fund Implementation Committee under the Global Diaspora Council. Prof. Owusu-Manu further highlighted the new Board Chair’s “unparalleled expertise in governance, sustainability, and industrial transformation,” positioning him as the ideal leader for GCI’s next phase of growth.

“His leadership will not just be about guiding the GCI, but also about shaping a legacy of shared prosperity, resilience, and sustainability for generations yet to come,” Prof. Owusu-Manu added.

Ing. Prof. Douglas Boateng is widely recognised as Africa’s first Professor Extraordinaire in Supply and Value Chain Management. His decades-long career includes significant contributions to boardroom leadership, public advisory roles, and sustainability advocacy. He has received multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards, including recognition from Hewlett-Packard for his work in advancing supply chain knowledge.

In 2024, the Institute of Directors-Ghana named him Director of the Year, acknowledging his dedication to ethical leadership and accountability. A Chartered Engineer and Chartered Director, Prof. Boateng consistently advocates for long-term thinking and intergenerational responsibility among African leaders, sharing his insights through his popular ‘NyansaKasa’ (Words of Wisdom) reflections.

GCI anticipates that under Prof. Boateng’s guidance, the organisation will transition from advocacy to delivering tangible impact, shaping policies, influencing boardrooms, and mobilising youth. Prof. Owusu-Manu envisions ICESDA becoming a globally influential forum within the next 5-10 years.

“By embedding governance discipline, diaspora engagement, and ESG principles into its programs, GCI will not only amplify Africa’s voice in global sustainability debates but also catalyze billions in investment for green infrastructure, industrialization, and inclusive growth,” he noted. GCI ultimately aims to empower youth, women, and marginalised communities to lead the charge towards a resilient and prosperous future, with Prof. Boateng’s appointment marking a significant step in that direction.
