Security consultant Professor Kwesi Aning has advocated for an expansion of the National Peace Council to better address the changing landscape of peacebuilding in Ghana.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, Professor Aning lauded the Council’s work since its inception but emphasized the urgent need to revise its composition to reflect current national realities.
“Ghana has changed dramatically since the Peace Council was established, and we need to look at the Peace Council Act and broaden the membership of the council,” he stated.
According to Prof. Aning, increased representation of women and young people is crucial, as these demographics are particularly sensitive to contemporary challenges and play a vital role in maintaining peace.
He further noted the current dominance of religious leaders within the Council, stressing the importance of a more diverse membership that includes voices from various sectors of society.
“Right now, it is very religious-member heavy. We need to broaden that to bring in more women and youth so that it is reflective of the country that we are seeking to build peace,” Prof. Aning explained.
He believes that strengthening representation will significantly improve the Council’s ability to effectively address emerging conflicts nationwide.
Professor Aning’s call comes after President John Mahama recently highlighted the growing concern over chieftaincy and land disputes, which are straining the country’s security resources.
