Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Left Out of Government Initiative

The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association has expressed disappointment over its exclusion from consultations regarding the government’s Nkoko Nkiti Nkiti poultry initiative.

Ali Mohammed, Chief Executive Officer of the Association, stated that despite representing over 1,400 active poultry farmers – the largest organised group in the country – they have not been privy to any policy documents or invited to participate in the programme’s design or implementation.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, December 19, Mr. Mohammed revealed that numerous letters requesting engagement with the authorities have gone unanswered. “On this Nkoko Nkiti Nkiti project the government is rolling out, as the biggest organisation in the country with over 1,412 active farmers, we have never seen the policy documents or how the rollout is being done,” he said. He further emphasized that their attempts to offer input were ignored, stating, “Nobody responded.”

According to Mr. Mohammed, the initiative appears to be progressing without the involvement of the farmers who are crucial to Ghana’s poultry sector recovery. When directly asked if the Association had been consulted at any stage, he responded emphatically: “Never. Never. I’m telling you, never. I can say on authority, no.”

He also disclosed that currently, none of the Association’s members are benefiting from the intervention. “We asked our members if any of them are benefiting. Nobody can speak to it. At this point, we can only wish the programme well,” he noted.

The Nkoko Nkiti Nkiti initiative was launched by the government to boost local poultry production and lessen Ghana’s dependence on imported chicken. However, the Association’s concerns raise significant questions about stakeholder engagement, transparency, and whether the programme truly reflects the needs of local poultry farmers.
