The Ghana Police Service has apprehended seven individuals suspected of drug peddling in Tamale, Northern Region, following a targeted operation that yielded significant quantities of illicit substances.

The Special Operations Team, working in conjunction with the Gulkpegu Chief Task Force, conducted the exercise as part of increased security measures implemented during the ongoing festive season. Authorities say the operation is a major step in disrupting drug distribution networks within the city.

Gladys Lariba, a resident of Taha, is among those arrested. She is alleged to be selling toffees laced with Indian hemp, alongside dried leaves also suspected to be the narcotic substance. Police are investigating the extent of her operations.

Joseph Christian, Musah Stephen, and Fatau Issahaku were also arrested, found in possession of Tramadol capsules and substances believed to be Indian hemp. The quantities seized have not yet been disclosed.

Acting on intelligence from the Gulkpegu Chief Task Force, police arrested Amina Isahaku and her husband, Muhammed Sumaila, with multiple boxes of Tramadol capsules. The couple is currently assisting with investigations.

Two other suspects, Hidir and Hikima Yahaya, are currently at large. A manhunt has been launched to locate and arrest them, with police stating they are determined to dismantle the entire drug distribution network.

“We are working tirelessly to keep Tamale safe and secure,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Bawah Abdul Jalil, leader of the Special Operations Team. “This exercise demonstrates the commitment, professionalism and operational effectiveness of our team. It also underscores the importance of community collaboration and inter-agency cooperation in the fight against crime.”

The police have assured residents of Tamale that they will continue to intensify efforts to curb the drug trade and maintain law and order throughout the festive season and beyond.
