A 39-year-old man has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the murder of a University of Cape Coast student, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had gripped the campus community since the young woman vanished five days ago.

Michael Mensah was apprehended on Sunday, June 15, 2026, at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast by the IGP Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations. The arrest came four days after the victim, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, was last seen alive.

According to preliminary findings from investigators, the suspect, who claims to be a teacher by profession but also works as a driver, picked Ms. Avinu from Ayensu Plaza within the university hostel enclave on the evening of June 11, at approximately 6:48 p.m. He is then alleged to have taken her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen.

The circumstances surrounding Ms. Avinu death have sent shockwaves through the University of Cape Coast, one of Ghana premier public institutions. Students and staff have expressed deep concern over the safety of learners, particularly those living in hostels near the campus.

Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing, nor have they provided details on how Ms. Avinu died. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further updates will be communicated as they become available.

The arrest underscores the growing sophistication of Ghana law enforcement apparatus, particularly the IGP Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, which has been deployed in an increasing number of cases involving digital forensics and intelligence-led policing.

For the university community, the arrest raises as many questions as it answers. How did a man who was not formally affiliated with the institution gain access to a student within the hostel enclave? What safeguards exist to prevent strangers from luring students away from campus grounds?

The case highlights the vulnerability of young women in educational institutions across the country. Ghana has made significant strides in expanding access to higher education, but the safety of students remains a pressing concern.

As the investigation continues, the police have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward. The suspect is expected to be arraigned before the courts in the coming days.
