The Ghana Police Service has apprehended four individuals and seized a substantial amount of narcotics in a recent crackdown on drug trafficking within the Tamale Metropolis.
The operation, spearheaded by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team, focused on known crime hotspots throughout the city. Police visibility was increased and intelligence gathering intensified as part of the initiative, which began recently.
Ibrahim Abudu was the first to be arrested at Taha, found with Tramadol capsules and a quantity of suspected Indian hemp, according to police reports. Following his arrest, Abdul Hanan was apprehended at Gumani with a parcel of suspected Indian hemp. Hanan subsequently assisted investigators in identifying his supplier, Mohammed Ibrahim, who was discovered with sacks containing the illicit substance.
A raid on the Changli area, notorious for drug peddling, yielded seven bottles of Benylin Codeine, various opioid drugs, and more suspected Indian hemp. “We are committed to dismantling these networks and ensuring the safety of our communities,” a senior police officer stated, preferring not to be named due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Further arrests were made with Seidu Abdul Razak and Arafat Yasir taken into custody at Bilpeila and Taha respectively, both found with opioid tablets and other unidentified pills. All four suspects are currently detained at the Sakasaka Police Station to aid in ongoing investigations.
The police have assured residents of the Tamale Metropolis that these intelligence-led operations will continue to safeguard lives, property, and economic activity. Efforts are underway to locate and arrest additional suspects linked to the drug trafficking ring.
