The first light of dawn barely kissed the El Wak Stadium in Accra, but the figures of Edmond Govina and Amos Ahianga were already hard at work. Their dedication was a study in contrasts: Edmond, powerfully built, launching a javelin into the air; Amos, lean and quick, sprinting across the track. For these Ghanaian para athletes, sport is more than just competition; it’s a testament to the transformative power of resilience.

Edmond Govina and Amos Ahianga are not just athletes; they are redefining Ghana’s sporting narrative. Guided by their coach, Sulemana Ibrahim, who discovered and nurtured their extraordinary talents, they strive for excellence against immense odds. Their stories are powerful reminders that strength knows no bounds.

Despite facing numerous challenges—from inaccessible training facilities to a lack of essential equipment—these athletes exemplify resilience, determination, and the power of sports to transform lives. Their achievements inspire a call for greater support and recognition of para-sports in Ghana, urging the nation to acknowledge the immense potential within its differently abled citizens.

Edmond Govina’s journey to the track was born of adversity.

“I actually had an accident—I was involved in a road traffic accident,” Edmond recounts. “I think in my rehabilitation, that was where I met a physio and he introduced me to sports as part of my rehab.”

From that introduction, he rose to become the captain of Ghana’s para-athletics team, Edmond found a new purpose. His dedication to javelin and shot put is fueled by a burning desire to excel. He sought guidance to navigate this new path, driven by an intrinsic desire to thrive.

“I needed someone to counsel me on what exactly I would do, and I approached the NPC,” Edmond explains, referring to the National Paralympic Committee. “They counselled me, looked at my strengths, and saw where they felt I could do well.”

Amos Ahianga’s talent was evident from a young age, even to those who doubted the potential of a differently-abled sprinter. His journey began on the same track where he now trains.

“Way back in primary, we used to come to El Wak to train and compete in inter-school [sports events], and when we were here to compete, I was the best among them [including able-bodied students],” Amos remembers, his voice filled with pride.

It was Coach Sulemana Ibrahim who saw Amos’s true potential and provided the encouragement he needed.

“The way I was able to run with the able-bodied people and came first, he wanted to train me so that I could become somebody in future,” Coach Sulemana recalls, explaining his early faith in Amos’s abilities.

Through sports, Amos has experienced opportunities he never thought possible.

“Through the sport, I was able to travel to Morocco, France, and Malawi, so I went to experience life out there. It has really helped me a lot,” Amos says, reflecting on the transformative impact of athletics on his life.

Coach Sulemana Ibrahim’s role extends beyond that of a typical trainer; he is a mentor, a confidant, and an unwavering believer in his athletes.

Seeing Amos’s potential early on, Sulemana approached his teacher with a proposition:

“This boy is a product, a material for the nation—not for you alone—so we can help him to achieve something,” Coach Sulemana asserted, recognizing the diamond in the rough.

Edmond, too, sought out Coach Sulemana’s guidance, drawn to his reputation for nurturing talent and fostering resilience. The coach’s support has been instrumental in Edmond’s development as a para-athlete.

The path to success is not without its obstacles. The athletes face numerous challenges, including a lack of transport and financial constraints. The dedication required often demands immense personal sacrifice.

“Waking up at 5 a.m. to train, no transport, and using your own money. Some days, I wanted to give up. But Coach Ibrahim always encouraged me to sacrifice for my future,” Amos confides, highlighting the daily struggles they endure.

“Our biggest challenge is the lack of local competitions. Without competing with others in our impairment category, we are underprepared for international contests. Our stadiums aren’t friendly either,” Edmond points out, emphasizing the practical barriers that hinder their progress.

Furthermore, access to essential equipment remains a significant hurdle.

“We lack essential equipment like prosthetics and racing wheelchairs. These are expensive, and many athletes can’t afford them,” Edmond explains, underscoring the financial strain on the athletes and the need for greater support.

There’s a growing consensus that para-sports deserve a fair share of national investment, enhanced media exposure, and structural planning. It is time for Ghana to recognize and support its para athletes adequately.

“We want the sports minister to open support to all disciplines. With five years of serious planning, Ghana can lead in para-sports,” Coach Sulemana asserts, advocating for a more inclusive approach to sports funding and development.

Edmond and Amos serve as role models for people with disabilities, demonstrating that limitations need not define one’s potential.

“Begging is not our purpose. There are opportunities — in sports, education, skills training,” Amos declares, challenging societal perceptions and inspiring others to pursue their dreams.

“Para-sports can change your world and help others along the way. It’s not just about medals, but dignity and achievement,” Edmond concludes, encapsulating the profound impact of sports on individual lives and communities.

The stories of Edmond Govina and Amos Ahianga highlight the strength, resilience, and unwavering determination of Ghanaian para athletes. Despite facing significant challenges, they continue to strive for excellence, inspiring others and challenging societal norms. It is imperative that Ghana provides greater support and recognition for these athletes, acknowledging their immense potential and contributions to the nation. Beyond their missing limbs lies immense heart and potential, ready to rise to the occasion. Support para-sports through donations, advocacy, and raising awareness. The rise of para-athletes in Ghana, from amputee football to powerlifting, signifies a shift towards inclusivity and opportunity. Let the nation rise with them, celebrating their achievements and investing in their future.
